Giant Allium Chicken Wire Flowers

My daughter sent me a link inspiring me to get outdoors and think fun!  But all it did was make me obsess over how I could fabricate these big A$$ purple flowers with chicken wire.
With no instructions on the link, I was forced to create my own Giant Allium flowers with only this amazing picture to guide me
I scrounged some chicken wire from my Chicken Daycare Project.

Found this heavy ball statue for a jig,    I made a bigger one with a basketball and it worked great!

You could use anything round and hard,
 hmmmm that doesn't sound right.

This will be where the stem gets attached.  A view from the top.

I used some bamboo stakes that I stole from my greenhouse tomatoes.

When I only had three of them to spare, I ended up using metal stretcher rods from an old car tent which was salvaged to build  a Recycled Greenhouse Project.  I liked the metal rods better as they can be forced  into the ground  more easily.

Added some duct tape to the stem to cover the poky wire ends.  If only  I would have had green duct tape to begin with.
Now you gotta pull it off the mold and twist the top closed while trying to keep it ball shaped.  I didn't get a picture of this step, but it looks like an open top flower at this point.  Twisting it closed will bend it out of shape but with patience and perhaps some gloves, you can get it back into a round ball shape.   The excess wire was cut off with side cutters and  pushed down to keep a globe like shape.
It's hard to see in this photo, but I covered the stem in floral tape.  At this point I still need to pick up some purple spray paint so I might buy some green duct tape from the dollar store to cover the stems as I am pretty sure the floral tape won't hold up to the`great outdoors.
And off to town I go.....
Got the purple spray paint and green duct tape. I sprayed all ten of them, wrapped some of the stems and tried my best to get some half decent shots....I know you already went to the other site....That's okay.  I think I've been there at least ten times.

Speaking of garden art, guess what we finished.....

We will need one more leaf in this area to complete the trio.  But for this season, we will settle for twins!    They both light up at night and probably freak the moths out.
Okay....go now and check out the original picture one last time!  Aren't they amazing......traitor!

  1. These are so crafty!!! You need to stop because I feel like such a slacker with the crafts lately;)

  2. Here's my complaints in order of importance:
    (1) you assumed I would rush to the other site. I do as I'm told. I didn't go until you said I could.
    (2) when I did, it only made me wish I had all the things I don't.
(3)When are you going to make that bench on the site with the giant lips?

  3. Oh boy, it was fun reading this post! I thought you were vacationing, but no, you cannot stop working. I love how your project turned out, and no I didn't have to go to the other site, your alliums and leaves are beautiful!

  4. I never looked. I happen to know you are the cleverest lass I know and figure nobody could do a better job than you. No need to look elsewhere. I think these are extremely fun!! How come your tomatoes are so gorgeous, sitting there growing with flowers all around. Thinking I need to plant flowers in my tomato beds. Is it too late, do you think? I can't wait until I move in and get to see your lit leaves in person.

  5. Bats freak me out too! Sorry...I "traited" and looked at the buzzfeed site...they have some really cool ideas! Love how your flowers turned out. :P

  6. Wow! They look amazing! And at least they won't suffer from a lack of rain this summer! I went to the site and I love the idea to use a mailbox to store small garden tools. Keeping this in mind.

  7. If we had bats I wouldn't mind freaking them out... especially with those amazing leaf sculptures. Unfreakinbelievable!!! I need me some of those. Your alliums turned out great. I need me some of those too.

  8. What a cool project! I didn't look at the original ... I'm not a traitor. Just lazy. I made a chicken wire cloche... about killed myself. That stuff is wicked!

  9. I love allium and have never planted any. Maybe this is the answer to getting some permanent ones! LOL! I love these Karen and once again you have outdone yourself! They look so ethereal in your pictures! Very cool!

  10. Ok, I looked. Lol. Those are great but oh my! I love your leaves! I am looking through your blog and enjoying it very much.

  11. I haven't looked, maybe after I finish pinning. Your allium flowers are simply gorgeous!!!! I would love to have these in my yard, if the yard were only bigger. You have so much space, you lucky girl. You could probably create a whole field of these with the space you have! Purple and chicken wire are two of my favorite things. Love them, Karen ;)

  12. Okay, I just looked and yours are just as perfectly purple and round as those. Actually yours are better because they have green stems!!

  13. Okay, I went after you told me to twice. What a lot of cool ideas!! And your flowers look absolutely fantastic! :)

  14. Awesome Awesome Awesome Karen, they came out fantastic. You can take the traitor back too because I waited until I had read the whole post :P

  15. Love, love, love these. I have to get me some chicken wire!

  16. I am going to hang my head in shame, because I did go look. I know you'll forgive me cause you are a cool friend like that though :)

Those Truffula Trees are always my favorite in The Lorax. Every time I see those flowers I think of Dr. Seuss. I think you did a great job making yours. I bet your yard is the envy of all the neighbors. You have so much cool stuff in it!

  17. I'm a traitor - she's a traitor - wouldn't you like to be a traitor too...................?
Yours are every bit as gorgeous as " their's " every single bit - and that leaf art? Absolutely amazing!!!
My fingers would be completely sliced open if I attempted that !

  18. I have seen the tree planter with the pots all over it, but have not been able to find directions. Can you please send directions?

  19. I made a deer years ago painted it gold then added gold glitter. It was really pretty. I want to make the flowers but it seems the ones I want to make have to instructions on how to. The round ones are a no brainer but the ones that are opened are much prettier and would like the instructions.

Cheers to great words!
