Home Remedy Collection: Steamers

Blah...I'm sick.
Last flu season, I made some shower soothers.

They were okay, but I needed about six in the shower as they were so small.
I decided the best way to get the most out of my homemade shower discs was to throw just one in a pot of hot steamy water and capture the steam with a towel over my head!  Much more effective than the shower method.    It opened up my breathing passages and my head felt better immediately.
When you are sick, any relief is good.

1/2 cup sodium bicarbonate
1 TBSP of water at a time until you have a paste
10 drops Thieves Oil *below

OR

1/2 cup of Sodium Bicarbonate
1/4 cup citric acid
I added 1 Tablespoon of witch hazel at a time until I had a paste.
Mix in 10 drops of Thieves oil *recipe below

Thieves Oil
8 drops of clove oil
7 drops lemon oil
4 drops of cinnamon oil
3 drops of eucalyptus oil
2 drops of rosemary oil
(Legend says that thieves used to rub this oil mixture over their bodies to stay sickness-free,
while robbing bodies of black plague victims.???? hmmm maybe they just got lucky!)

Pack into molds...I used the Ikea ice cube molds and spooned the mixture in until the molds were full.

Let dry overnight.  Take out of molds and store in an airtight container.

I will give this a 5 out of 5!
It opened up my airway and helped relieve my headache.....temporarily!
Well long enough for a quick post.
Stay well and wash, wash, wash your hands my friends!
Cheers.

Thanks for your visit.  I appreciate you all!

  1. I'll prepare some next weekend just in case I get sick. I'm not sure I have clove oil, though, need to check. Hope you'll be back to your full self soon.

  2. As I sit here sniffling, I can see I came to the right place. Oh I wish I had some of these right now, but I will have to make some for future sniffles. I hope you are feeling better real soon and I'm pinning for keeps. I love natural remedies. How cute the look made from the ikea molds.

  3. I'm really becoming more interested in natural remedies because I have sinusitus and in the winter my sinus passages are more often blocked than not. I sleep with a breath right on every night or I can't sleep. How long do you think they'll last in an airtight container? I'm sorry you're not feeling well. The flu is always a bummer. I hope you feel better soon.

  7. I saw something like this on Pinterest and wondered how well they work. Thankfully we haven't gotten sick here this winter yet. The flu hit our area hard, claiming 4 lives since Christmas, so we had a little panic about that. I think that's passed though, fingers crossed. Hope you feel better real soon!

  9. So sorry you aren't feeling well! I think a lot of people get sick right after the holidays (or during) because we tend to stress ourselves out and eat poorly and do not get adequate rest. Am I guilty -- oh, yes. Just because I have a good theory doesn't mean I do anything about it. Maybe this year will be different....lol!

You mentioned in the comment on my Streamlined Storage that you were no longer getting my posts by email. I went in and checked everything and entered my own address to check it out, and it seems to be working fine. Maybe you could just go in and sign up again to my email alerts -- hope that will solve the problem.

Take care and get well soon!

  12. If you’re in doubt of any unpleasant growth in your house, you should simply assume there is a problem whenever you see mold or smell mold odors. Testing should never take the place of visual inspection (which is recommended) and it should never use up resources that are needed to correct moisture problems and remove visible growth.
People used to think that molds were harmless but it isn’t. The fact is, some molds produce a toxin called aflatoxin (toxic and among the most carcinogenic substances known) that causes illness and death in people.
Sometimes, mold growth is hidden and difficult or hard to locate and find. In such cases, carefully conducted sampling and visual inspection may help determine the location of contamination. However, mold testing is rarely useful for trying to answer questions or inquiries about health concerns. For more information, see mold testing services

  13. I'm late to the party as usual lately - but my Mother does this every single time she gets sick - and swears by it - you'd think I'd have tried it by now!!!
Hope you're better - colds seem to last forever now, don't they?
